I arrived at the Grand Canyon the day after a monsoon flood took out footbridges, trails, and about 40% of the park’s water pipeline. I’d come as the Grand Canyon Conservancy’s artist in residence to write a cookbook. Instead the canyon asked me to listen: to bats hunting above the rim at night, to the rock’s deep time, to the river and rail routes that carried people, my family among them, through this land to Williams, Arizona. Under the Rim gathers video, audio, maps, and grave etchings made over two months.
